Practise the Year 1 phonics screening check, set up like the real thing: 40 words in two sections, real words and alien (nonsense) words with a picture of an alien, in the word types and sounds the official framework sets out, from simple three-letter words to two-syllable words. Show one word at a time or four to a page like the check, and mark each word as the child reads it. A score out of 40 at the end, with the words and sounds to go over. Print the words and a marking sheet too; every check is new.
